I am so tired. Seriously, so tired. My daughter graduated from high school a week ago today, and I'm still exhausted. I'm just not cut out for this all night partying anymore, know what I mean? I know what you're thinking, she's the one who stayed up til midnight studying all year long, she's the one who's tossing and turning in her bed with anxiety about going off to college and becoming an honest-to-goshen responsible adult and figuring out what the heck she wants to do with the rest of her life, and she's the one who got up at 7am for graduation rehearsal and then stayed up all night long after graduation partying with all of her friends at Sober Grad, not me, right?
Well, I actually finagled my way into landing the role of D.J. at this year's Sober Grad party, which means I had to stay up until 3am playing music for a bunch of recently graduated high school students at the YMCA. And it's taken me all week long to catch up! I feel so old.
But I was feeling pretty fly at the Sober Grad party, pretty sure of myself. I know I'm just an old mom, but I did my homework, asked for requests (in advance), and made it my mission to acquire every song on a list of music given to me by the Senior class that was 5 pages long. I'm not exaggerating. FIVE pages long.
The cool thing about it was listening to each song deemed worthy by the Seniors, and then doing a little bit of internet homework to find music that was up & coming, music that will be at the top of the charts later this summer, but hasn't quite made it onto their radars yet. Music that's so freaking cool, they just don't know it yet.
Some of this music, if you're over 30, is probably going to really irritate you. Just consider yourself forewarned about that (and if it doesn't irritate you, just consider yourself uber hip for an old fart).
But what I think might surprise you about today's playlist (which only includes songs I played at the Sober Grad party) is the selection of songs requested that you and I might remember from our days in high school. Some of the songs that the cool kids of the Class of 2015 specifically asked for their all night graduation party are exactly the songs that we knew by heart and requested 30 (and 40) years ago when we were them. The cool kids. The high school graduates. Some day these cool kids will be old farts. I can't wait for them to feel old when their kids are graduating from high school and requesting a classic rock tune from Lady Gaga or Nicki Minaj.
